Gergeti Trinity Church is an architectural complex in the municipality of Kazbegi, Georgia, located at an altitude of 2200 meters above sea level. The Trinity was the main shrine of Khevi.
According to Teimuraz Batonishvili, the Apostle Andrew the First-Called visited the gorge and installed a cross in Gergeti. In Gergete, a cross was also erected by Saint Nino, who also preached in the gorge. According to legend, the construction of the temple is associated with Vakhtang Gorgasali. The exact date of construction of the temple is unknown; it was probably built in the 30s of the 14th century.
The temple was built in the 14th century in the name of the Transfiguration of the Lord. King Bagrat V entrusted the maintenance of the temple to the Gergeti people, who were considered “sons of the church”.
From the courtyard of the Gergeti Trinity Church there are stunning views of Mount Kazbek (Mkinvartsveri) and the town of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi).
