Tbilisi Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the central cathedral of the Catholic Church of Georgia. It was built in 1804. Catholics were allocated a place on this street and 6,000 rubles. The Austrian monarch also contributed 1,286 piastres to the construction. In the 19th century the church was further expanded. In 1937, the church was abolished, and it was resumed on August 15, 1999 during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Georgia. Today, services in the cathedral are performed only in Georgian with Roman kontakion.
