Mtatsminda Park is the best place for entertainment and recreation, a fabulous setting, clean air, unique landscape, beautiful views of Tbilisi and modern attractions will allow you to relax, unwind and have fun with your family or friends.
Mtatsminda Park is located at an altitude of 770 meters and is the highest point in Tbilisi. The park is divided into three zones – children’s, family and extreme. On the territory of the park there are restaurants and cafes, shops, recreation areas, a celebration center and a wedding house.
In the 1900s, the idea arose to expand Upper Tbilisi. According to the plan, “Upper Tbilisi” was to be built on the Mtatsminda plateau. A development plan for “Zeda (upper) Tbilisi” and a street network were developed. The main problem was transport links with “Lower Tbilisi”. A way to solve this problem was presented by a Belgian company that owned the Tbilisi tram network.
On the initiative of the Belgian engineer Alphonse Robb, the new area was to be connected to the Old Town by a mountain tram – a funicular. A Belgian Anonymous Society was to operate the funicular for 45 years, and then it would be donated to the city. The construction project was developed by the French engineer A. Blanche. The construction of the road was led by Belgian and Italian engineers.
The funicular was opened in 1905. Niko Pirosmani dedicated a large painting to its commissioning. To encourage newcomers, the owner of the funicular, the Belgian anonymous society, announced the payment of a significant sum to those who climb it to Mtatsminda. In 2000, the body of the funicular collapsed. As part of the renovation, the old carriages were replaced with models from the Swiss company Doppelmayr, and in 2012, after 13 years of renovation, it was reopened.
The Tbilisi funicular is a mountain cable railway, the same tram. The length of the road is 501 meters. The angle of inclination of the rails is 28-33°. 60 people can travel in the carriages at the same time. In the middle of the road there is a special platform 70 m long, where the wagons go around each other. From here passengers go to the Mtatsminda Pantheon. The height of the upper station of the funicular is 727 m above sea level. The rolling stock consists of 2 wagons.
Mtatsminda Park is the most popular park in Tbilisi, offering views of the entire city.
