Tbilisi city tour
Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, located on the banks of the Kura River. The history of Tbilisi as the capital of Georgia begins around the 5th century. According to legends, the territory of Tbilisi was covered with forests when King Vakhtang I Gorgasal (440-502) hunted in the forests, his hunting falcon wounded a pheasant, the bird fell to the ground and, having landed in a hot spring, cooked. The nickname “Gorgasal” is translated from Persian as “wolf head”, a hint of the shape of his helmet. Surprised by such an event, the king ordered the city to be built on this site. The name Tbilisi comes from the Georgian “Tbili”, meaning “warm”, due to the warm sulfuric springs in its territory. But the territory of Tbilisi was inhabited by people as far back as the 4th millennium BC. The name “Tbtlada” is on Roman maps, and thermal baths of the I-II centuries with mosaic pools, dressing rooms and a developed system of ceramic pipes have been excavated in the historical center of Tbilisi.
Tbilisi is located in the Tbilisi Basin, stretching in a narrow strip for almost 30 km in the Kura River Valley and on the slopes of the mountains adjoining on three sides. The height above sea level is 380-770 meters. The many-sided history of Tbilisi can be studied by its architecture: from the spacious avenues of Rustaveli and Agmashenebeli to the narrow streets of the Sololaki and Narikala districts preserved from the early Middle Ages.
Tbilisi has an international airport. The most famous tourist sites in Tbilisi: Holy Trinity Cathedral, Freedom Square, Sioni Cathedral, Metekhi, Narikala fortress, Georgian Parliament building, Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi Opera, Anchiskhati, Mtatsminda (Holy Mountain), Tbilisi TV tower, Kashveti Church, Peace Bridge, the new Rike park on the left bank of the Kura River, the Tbilisi Botanical Garden, etc. Tbilisi is a rather green city, it has many parks, squares and gardens, the largest is Vake Park.
