Zhinvali Dam is a multi-purpose dam in eastern Georgia. It is located in the middle of the Aragvi River, 70 km from Tbilisi. Its maximum depth is 75 m. It was created in 1985 in connection with the construction of the Zhinvali hydroelectric power station in the valley of the Aragvi River. The power generated is 130,000 kW.
The Zhinvali Dam is of great importance in the issue of water supply to the city of Tbilisi. It should be noted that the Zhinvali Dam supplies drinking water to approximately half of the population of Tbilisi. At the beginning of the construction of the Zhinvali hydro complex, the 12th century Church named after the Cross (Jvaripatiosani) was submerged under water, which is immersed in water for 6 months and freed from water for 6 months.
When visiting the Zhinvali Dam, you can take stunning photos of bluish water and panoramic mountain views. Then you will visit the Ananuri complex, built near the dam. The Ananuri Fortress dates back to the 16th-18th centuries.
